Cyber Daily: Companies Battle Another Pandemic: Skyrocketing Hacking Attempts

Aug. 24, 2020 9:05 am ET | WSJ Pro

Good day. If poor passwords and shared laptops are the stuff of cybersecurity nightmares, corporate security chiefs aren’t getting much sleep these days. As soon as companies sent employees to work from home as the coronavirus spread, hackers pelted corporate networks with cyberattacks, report WSJ Pro’s Catherine Stupp and James Rundle. As one cyber leader put it, “That really opened the opportunity for malicious attackers to start banging against the door to see what would stick.”

Other news: Facebook CEO Zuckerberg stoked anti-TikTok fears; SEC strengthens privacy in market-surveillance database; fertility app shared data; and Australian “Real Housewives” star tricked in cyber scam.

Remote Work Risks

Companies battle another pandemic: skyrocketing hacking attempts. Work-from-home requirements have magnified cybersecurity threats for practically every company, whose data now must traverse Wi-Fi networks with passwords named after the family dog while workers share devices with teenagers taking classes on Zoom or playing Fortnite with their friends.
